The Managing Director of Electricity Company of Ghana Limited, Mr Kwame Agyeman Budu on Saturday 7th December, 2019 accompanied the President, H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Minister of Energy, Hon. John Peter Amewu and his two deputies to commission the Karpowership Interconnection Project at the Sekondi Naval Base. The 470MW Karpowership is one of the power plants producing power for distribution by the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG).
By switching from Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) to operate on indigenous Natural Gas (NG), the country will directly save an amount of USD170.5m every year and a total of about USD1.2billion over the remaining term of the Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). The indirect benefits of operating the Karpowership on NG instead of Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) includes the avoidance of the take-or-pay cost and the environmental benefits of operating on clean fuel.
